Damon Heta celebrated his first European Tour success with a dramatic 8-7 win over Peter Wright in Sunday’s Gibraltar Darts Trophy final.

A thrilling end to the year’s PDC European Tour action saw Australia’s Heta scoop the £25,000 top prize at the Victoria Stadium following an action-packed final.

World Champion Wright produced some superb darts to lead 3-0, only for Heta to take out a 167 finish on his way to a 7-5 lead.

Wright took the next two to take the final to a sudden-death leg, but after being first to a finish spurned six championship darts across three visits.

Heta had missed four darts of his own in two visits as the pair searched for the winning blow, before he posted double four to seal glory.

“I’m absolutely stoked,” said Heta. “To get one European Tour title under my belt so early in my career, it’s unexpectedly expected.

“My weekend’s been up and down – I haven’t had a steady game all weekend and to come away with my first European Tour win I’m really happy.

“Peter had his chances, just like I did, and the crowd deserved a last-leg decider. To happen like it did, I don’t know what to say!”

Heta had begun his challenge for the title on Saturday by defeating Chris Dobey, and saw off Masters champion Joe Cullen and German star Gabriel Clemens to reach the semi-finals.

He showed his class to then win a sensational contest with Michael van Gerwen, coming from 4-1, 5-2 and 6-4 down with legs of 13, 11 and 15 darts to edge into the final, landing nine 180s in an action-packed clash.

Wright produced an outstanding response to last weekend’s loss to Van Gerwen in the World Grand Prix semi-finals in his run to the final.

The world No 1 averaged 108 in Sunday afternoon’s third round win over Ryan Searle, 105 in his quarter-final defeat of Luke Humphries and almost 109 in his 7-1 semi-final romp against Rob Cross.

He also took out brilliant 121 checkout of bull, treble seven and bull in the second leg of the final – bringing a bumper crowd at the Victoria Stadium to its feet – only to later agonisingly miss out on the title.

“Hats off to Damo,” said Wright. “I didn’t expect to miss my doubles, and I didn’t expect him to miss but hopefully it was entertainment!

“It was his day today. He gave me chances to get back into the match, he was blowing me away and he took his foot off the pedal.

“He’s been pushing and pushing but he gets horrible draws and keeps running into the top players.

“He’s left home and come over here but now you watch him. He’s proven to the world – he beat Michael van Gerwen and me and he can beat anybody in the world, he’s brilliant.”

With the Gibraltar Darts Trophy marking the conclusion of the 13-event 2022 European Tour, the top 32 players from the final European Tour Order of Merit now progress to the Cazoo European Championship in Dortmund from October 27-30.

Jess Thirlby: England’s Vitality Roses gained ‘everything they hoped for’ from Uganda series | Netball News

England’s head coach expressed the pride she felt after a young group of Roses overcame Uganda and won their recent Test series 3-0; Jess Thirlby handed out a number of new caps during the series; a more experienced squad will now head to Australia to face the Commonwealth Games champions

England delivered a clean sweep of victories over Uganda in a recent home Test series

England’s head coach Jess Thirlby believes their recent series against Uganda gave them “everything they hoped for” and expressed her pride in the group’s achievements.

The Vitality Roses secured a series whitewash over Uganda, the sixth ranked team in the world, and finished the three-match series with a number of individuals having enjoyed their first taste of international netball.

Alice Harvey, Olivia Tchine, Ellie Ratu, Zara Everitt and Funmi Fadoju all made their debuts for England, while Laura Malcolm and Imogen Allison performed the roles of co-captains.

England did not have it all their own way and had to work hard for their three victories. They were behind at half-time during the first and second Tests, as well as being put under pressure after losing the third quarter of the final Test.

England vs Uganda – Results

Test One England 60-51 Uganda
Test Two England 53-45 Uganda
Test Three England 64-51 Uganda

“It’s given us everything that we hoped for – a fantastic challenge against a brilliant side,” Thirlby said to England Netball.

“We knew that Uganda are incredibly talented and every game has thrown up different challenges. There’s not one game where we were ever comfortable, but I could not be prouder of what the group has achieved.

“For the third Test to most probably be our best performance and our biggest win, I think is a real measure of the intent that this team have. They were determined that they wanted the clean sweep.”

England’s next task is the challenge of meeting the reigning Commonwealth Games champions Australia in their own backyard.

Thirlby selected her squad for the Australia tour prior to England’s outings against Uganda.

After the strong performances against Uganda from experienced returnee, Chelsea Pitman, it was suggested that she might be added to the group heading down under.

Thirlby made own thoughts clear on that after the third Test and said the squad would not be changing.

With two significant Test series sitting in such close proximity, pressure has been put on their preparations, but the head coach is grateful they are positioned at this point in the international season.

“The earlier in the year, the better… it affords us some time deeper into the winter to look back and reflect on what we’re going to take from the next couple of weeks.

“We’ve tried to be smart with the three camps that we’ve had, around where the similarities technically and tactically are between our prep for Uganda and our prep for Australia.

“There are some very unique things around the way in which Uganda play which won’t fully translate into the task at hand against Australia,” Thirlby continued.

“We’ve tried to be efficient with the time that we’ve had and now we can open up that aperture again and firmly have our eyes on the work for Australia.”

Helen Housby, Jo Harten and Geva Mentor witnessed England’s work against Uganda from afar, while the likes of Layla Guscoth, Nat Metcalf, Beth Cobden and Jade Clarke were also in the unfamiliar position of observing England from the sidelines.

Thirlby says all will be “raring to go” and with Australia coming into the series off the back of Constellation Cup games against New Zealand, the Roses must hit the ground running at the end of October.

Former Leeds Rhinos netballer Donnell Wallam is set to make her international debut for the Aussie Diamonds against England. The home side will also be without fellow shooter Gretel Bueta, after she announced her pregnancy.

Max Verstappen has opened up on the “very different emotions” of his two Formula 1 title triumphs, admitting his 2022 domination has been more “enjoyable” than the fierce battle against Lewis Hamilton.

As opposed to 2021 when the championship went down to the last lap of the last race – contentiously won by Verstappen – this year the Dutchman has stormed clear and wrapped up his crown with four rounds to spare.

“Yeah, very different emotions,” admitted Verstappen, 25, after he won the Japanese GP, his 12th victory from 18.

“You know, last year, all the way until the last race is probably the worst kind of feeling, going into that last race. But also because at the time, I don’t think we were the quickest anymore, so that also doesn’t help.

“And this year, it’s just been very, very different in emotions from the start, all the way through the year.”

Verstappen and Hamilton were locked on points heading into the Abu Dhabi GP last year, and the Mercedes driver was leading up until the end when Verstappen pounced on fresh tyres in a controversial one-lap showdown.

“Both are beautiful,” stated Verstappen. “Both are, at the end of the day, nice to experience because it’s nice also really to have the pressure on and having to perform to your limit every single lap of the race.

“But not for too many years in a row. So, I was very happy with the year we had this time around.”

Verstappen added on the differences: “Last year it was all really qualifying dependent, and that’s how you would normally win a race.

“Now, even with some engine penalties, it was coming back to the front, it’s really been an enjoyable year. And of course, a very special year, which will be very hard, I think, in the future to match from myself.

Could Verstappen retire from F1 early?

Verstappen, meanwhile, has indicated he will not be racing in F1 as long as some of his peers.

While Fernando Alonso is still starring in the sport at 41 and Hamilton at 37, Verstappen has told F1 he doesn’t foresee as long a career – also hinting that he would consider his next move after the end of his Red Bull deal.

Verstappen’s current contract expires at the end of 2028, when he will be 31 years old.

“I don’t see myself driving until I’m 40 because I want to also do other stuff,” Verstappen said.

“I’m having a lot of fun with what I’m doing right now and I’m still in F1 for a couple more years… I’m signed until ’28.

“After that, it also depends how everything is going but I will probably try to do a few different kinds of racing because it’s important also to try different things.”

Verstappen did, however, add: “I really enjoy being part of this team for a long time and hopefully for a long time to come.”

The drivers’ championship may be over, but we have four spectacular races to finish the season – starting with the United States GP from Austin, Texas on October 21-23. Watch all the action live on Sky Sports F1.

Today on Sky Sports Racing: Plumpton, Windsor and Wolverhampton all live on busy Monday of action | Racing News

The week starts with action from Plumpton, Windsor and Wolverhampton on a brilliantly busy Monday on Sky Sports Racing.

3.55 Plumpton Pasvolsky has four to beat for Gordon and Cannon

The feature class three Aldaniti Partnership Handicap Chase (3.55) looks set to provide local favourites Chris Gordon and Tom Cannon the chance to add to their impressive tally of winners at Plumpton.

The pair have combined for a season-leading three victories already and team up here with course and distance winner Pasvolsky.

I See You Well return to a course where he had two wins last season. Now returning from a 178-day absence, connections will be hoping for another big run.

Fairway Freddy makes a quick return to the track having won at Stratford two days ago, while one-time Grade One winning chaser Ornua has looked a shadow of his former self but if he can find some of his old spark he could play a part.

Gordon and Cannon link-up later on the card in the Bob Champion Cancer Trust Novices’ Handicap Chase (5.05) with hat-trick seeking Blade Runner.

3.00 Windsor Wisper back for more after impressive victory

Wisper was a hugely eye-catching winner at this course only seven days ago and Marcus Tregoning will be hoping the 5lb penalty won’t be enough to hold back his progressive four-year-old filly in the Ultimate Jumps Guide On attheraces.com/jumps Handicap (3.00).

Another to bring winning form into this contest is Daniel and Clair Kubler’s Andaleep, who was also last seen winning over this course and distance on the card last week.

He’s A Latchico is another intriguing runner for Gary Moore as the four-year-old has been off the course for 219 days but returns seeking a fourth win on the spin.

Moore also saddles top weight The Whipmaster, a winner at the track back in June, who steps down in grade after two poor efforts at Ascot and Epsom in recent months.

6.30 Wolverhampton Buckshaw Village faces the unexposed Aussie Banker

Richard Hughes’ Aussie Banker only has five starts to his name and he looks to be improving after backing up a win at Haydock with a decent effort at Nottingham.

Another three-year-old to feature in the At The Races App Market Movers Handicap (6.30) is Manhattanville, who has far more racecourse experience than Aussie Banker but will need to end a run of three consecutive third-placed efforts if he is to land this contest.

Buckshaw Village gave his owners a big pay-day when winning in the Racing League but disappointed last time out at Newcastle.

Watch every race from Plumpton, Windsor and Wolverhampton live on Sky Sports Racing on Monday, October 17.

Betting race of the day

At The Races’ Alan Thomson…

The Breeders’ Cup On Sky Sports Handicap (3.35) catches my beady betting eye with 11 runners declared for this Class 5 three-year-old contest over 10 furlongs and some tempting prices on display.

In an open contest V TWELVE ticks a lot of boxes. Brought along steadily by connections, he showed improvement on his last run and an earlier third in non-handicap company at Ffos Las stands up to scrutiny.

Jim Boyle’s Nonsuch Lad didn’t get home over one-mile-and-three-furlongs on his previous visit to the track in late June but has since scored twice over today’s trip, at Doncaster (well-backed favourite) and Sandown.

Despite racing off his highest career rating, Nonsuch Lad can go well along with penalised By Your Side. Any significant rain would be a bonus for By Your Side as all his best form has come with some cut in the ground. First-time cheek-pieces may eke out a little improvement in Chips And Rice.

Rugby League World Cup: Dom Young vows more to come after two tries in England opener | Rugby League News

Dom Young scored two tries for England in their win over Samoa

If you are not regular watcher of the NRL and were wondering ahead of the Rugby League World Cup what all the fuss with Dom Young was about, wonder no more.

The Newcastle Knights winger could hardly have asked for a better start to his international career. After showing a glimpse of what he could do with a try and two assists in England’s warm-up victory over Fiji, Young announced himself on the sport’s biggest stage in style in the tournament opener on Saturday.

Two tries in the 60-6 win over Samoa at St James’ Park showcased some of the best aspects of his game too. The first, bursting down the right touchline before cutting back inside to finish, saw his pace and game-reading and intelligence come to the fore, while the second was all about his athleticism as he took to the air with his 6′ 7″, 16st 12lb frame to dive over near the corner post.

Young is well aware of the expectations which were on him heading into the tournament, particularly after being chosen ahead of the experienced Ryan Hall to feature on the wing against the Samoans, but despite his impressive start to life in an England shirt, the 21-year-old knows he is still learning.

“I guess you could look at it that,” Young said. “A lot of people probably haven’t seen too much of me with me being in Australia, but every time I step on the field and try to do what’s best for the team and work hard.

“There are always things to improve on and that’s what I’ll look at, to see where I can get better. There is always more to learn.

“I’m the kind of player who is never happy or never satisfied. I always want to be the best version of myself and always want more from myself.”

Shaun Wane’s intent to give those players like Hall who were not part of the team against Samoa a run-out in England’s second Group A match against France this coming Saturday means Young may be a spectator for the match in Bolton.

Whether it is he or goal-kicking winger Tommy Makinson, who scored a try and kicked 20 points in the rout of Samoa, who is rested remains to be seen, although the St Helens man is impressed with what Young has added to the squad.

“Dom Young played great, I thought I had a good game, so whatever happens [with team selection for France] happens,” Makinson said.

“He’s great; he’s impressive, he’s young and energetic – he’s a great player and we love him to bits. He brings a lot to our team and I’m really happy that he’s in my squad.”

Young’s double in Newcastle carried extra significance for him given how his family on his mother’s side are from the city, along with being proud Newcastle United fans.

His mum and grandmother were among the 43,119 spectators at St James’ Park for the match too, adding to what was already a special day for the Wakefield-born player.

“I couldn’t have imagined that start before the game,” Young said. “To have all my friends and family watching it, it was a dream come true.

“Obviously my mum’s side of the family are from here and my mum and my grandma, I could see they were extra proud on Saturday. It was really nice to see them there, so it was special.”

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag refuses to speak about officials after Cristiano Ronaldo disallowed goal | Football News

Erik ten Hag kept his counsel about the officiating after Manchester United failed to “kill” off Newcastle in a frustrating goalless draw.

A packed Old Trafford witnessed a tense Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon, which started with Callum Wilson seeing a penalty appeal ignored.

Joelinton twice hit the woodwork during an impressive first half from Newcastle, but the hosts bounced back after the break and Cristiano Ronaldo quickly saw two goals ruled out.

There was no argument about the first decision but the Portugal forward was enraged by the second as he claimed Fabian Schar had taken the free-kick, meaning he was free to nip in to score before Nick Pope could react.

Howe disagreed with that viewpoint and said it would have been “very hard to swallow” if it had not been disallowed, which was put to Ten Hag in the post-match press conference.

“I don’t have a comment,” the United boss said. “Everyone has seen it.”

As well as the Ronaldo decision, Jadon Sancho was among those to see second-half penalty appeals ignored and Ten Hag spoke animatedly to referee Craig Pawson after the final whistle.

The Dutchman chuckled when asked if that was because he was unhappy with several decisions, responding: “As I said, I share that with them. You can try [to ask me].

“Everyone has seen the game. It’s your job to judge the performance from the teams and from the refs not me, so I will not do it.”

Despite feeling hard done by, Ten Hag’s side nearly snatched victory at the death as substitute Marcus Rashford crossed for Fred before heading just wide deep in stoppage time.

“I’m disappointed with the result but I’m happy with the performance,” Ten Hag said.

“A lot of elements of the team, the way of playing, we transferred on the pitch. We have seen that.

“The pressing the whole game was good. The second half possession was better. We made an improvement after half-time.

“Then you saw we dominate that game in the second half by far and also in the end the physical, again the mentality, how we kept going.

“You saw the problems they had and that is one of the best physical teams in the league. They all had cramp and we didn’t because we let them run because we were good on the ball and our pressing was good.

“In the end we break them but didn’t kill them by not scoring. We had the chances with Rashford – the assist for Fred and header from a great, great cross from Casemiro.

“OK, that happens, in football, so happy with the performance but disappointed with the result.”

Ronaldo looked disappointed to be taken off as United chased a winner – shaking his head and muttering to himself as he walked off – and was the only change made by Ten Hag on Sunday.

“We have to cover four games in 10 days – and especially for the strikers I want to keep them fresh,” he said.

“I want to keep them all fresh, so we have to rotate there. We have some problems. (Anthony) Martial is not available in this moment so we have a player less.

“Then Rashy was under the weather, so he did not have energy for the whole game so we have to plan to cover for the four games because we want to win all the four games or at least get a result in all four games.”

Howe confirms Saint-Maximin setback

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe believes his side should have been awarded a penalty against Manchester United after Callum Wilson appeared to be fouled in the box

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was pleased with his side’s display at Old Trafford and felt they had a “very strong” penalty shout for Raphael Varane’s early challenge on Wilson.

The Magpies now host Everton before travelling to Tottenham – matches big-money summer signing Alexander Isak will miss with a troublesome thigh injury.

To compound matters, fan favourite Allan Saint-Maximin missed Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford after complaining of a hamstring issue after his comeback last weekend.

“Huge blows for us,” Howe said. “They’re both very different cases.

“Maxi’s got a very slight irritation of his hamstring. The problem we have is on its own that would be probably a few days out but because it’s the third time he’s done it now we’re going to have to be very careful with his return to play.

“That’s a blow and Alex has just re-injured his thigh. It’s a very similar injury to the first one he picked up with Sweden.

“He’s going to be out for a period of time. We probably won’t see him before we break for the World Cup.”

Manchester United are back in action on Wednesday when they host top-four rivals Tottenham at Old Trafford, with kick-off at 8.15pm.

Erik ten Hag’s side then face another huge game on Saturday, when they travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea – live on Sky Sports – with kick-off at 5.30pm.

Liverpool 1 – 0 Man City

Mohamed Salah’s sensational second-half goal sealed a 1-0 victory for Liverpool over Manchester City in a pulsating encounter at Anfield which also saw Jurgen Klopp sent off.

Salah, fresh from his six-minute hat-trick against Rangers, produced a brilliant piece of control to take down Alisson’s long kick and spin away from Joao Cancelo before beating Ederson with a cool finish (76) as Liverpool put their recent struggles behind them.

Klopp’s red card came as tempers frayed in the closing stages, the Liverpool manager dismissed after reacting furiously when the hosts were denied a free-kick for an apparent foul by Bernardo Silva on Salah, whose goal ended a five-game Premier League scoreless streak.

That incident came after Pep Guardiola had also been left irate earlier in the game when a Phil Foden goal was overturned by VAR after Erling Haaland was deemed to have fouled Fabinho in the build-up.

Mohamed Salah scores Liverpool’s winner with an emphatic breakaway finish

Liverpool came into the game 13 points behind City following their worst start to a season in 10 years but they defended resolutely, becoming only the second Premier League side all season to prevent Haaland from scoring, and seizing their chance when Salah, who had earlier been denied by Ederson in similar circumstances, caused Anfield to erupt with a goal which breathes life into their season.

For City, meanwhile, the defeat brings an end to their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign and leaves them four points behind early leaders Arsenal, who beat Leeds 1-0 earlier on Sunday.

How Liverpool stopped the City machine

Liverpool were facing a momentous task against a City side who had scored 13 goals in their last three Premier League games and that task was made even tougher before a ball had been kicked.

A muscular injury to Ibrahima Kante saw the French international join Joel Matip on the sidelines, meaning Joe Gomez had to move across to centre-back and James Milner had to fill in at right-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold only fit enough for the bench.

Team news

  • Joe Gomez started in central defence due to an injury to Ibrahima Konate, James Milner started at right-back, while Mohamed Salah returned to the starting line-up following his hat-trick against Rangers.
  • Pep Guardiola made only one change from the Man City team that beat Southampton, with Ilkay Gundogan replacing Riyad Mahrez. Erling Haaland started again having been rested in midweek.

The makeshift backline faced a stern test against the free-scoring Halaand, and the City striker had a series of half-chances before the break fresh from being rested against FC Copenhagen in midweek.

The first of those chances saw him denied by Alisson when he attempted to chip the Liverpool goalkeeper from Ilkay Gundogan’s pass. He then twice spurned headed opportunities, the second of which came from a trademark Kevin De Bruyne cross.

Liverpool held firm, though, and created openings of their own in the first period too, with Diogo Jota sending a free header straight at Ederson from Harvey Elliott’s cross, and the returning Andrew Robertson blazing over following another dangerous attack.

Phil Foden’s goal against Liverpool was disallowed after an earlier Erling Haaland shirt-pull on Fabinho

It was after the break, though, that the game truly exploded into life.

A frenetic period began with Ederson brilliantly saving from Salah after the Egyptian had sprung City’s offside trap from Roberto Firmino’s pass, and within minutes City thought they were in front.

Foden was the man to have the ball in the net, firing in via a deflection off the otherwise outstanding Gomez after Alisson had failed to gather a De Bruyne pass under pressure from Haaland.

But City’s joy was short-lived, with referee Anthony Taylor instructed to consult the pitch-side monitor and duly penalising Haaland for a shirt pull on Liverpool midfielder Fabinho.

The reprieve emboldened Liverpool, with Jota going close again when he headed over from a Salah cross at the far post, but City continued to threaten too, with Haaland during a superb one-handed save from Alisson soon afterwards.

Klopp was sent off as tempers flared at Anfield in the closing stages

It was Liverpool, though, who made the decisive breakthrough, Salah’s outstanding control from Alisson’s kick outfoxing Cancelo and putting him through on goal for a second time.

City struggled to break down Liverpool as they tried to fight back in the closing stages, with tensions boiling over when Klopp was red carded by Taylor.

But it was Liverpool who created the better chances, with substitute Darwin Nunez inexplicably opting to shoot rather than find a team-mate during a three-on-one attack, and Alexander Arnold, another substitute, also going close.

In the end, though, a single goal was enough. Enough to kickstart Liverpool’s season, perhaps, and certainly enough to leave City with catching up to do on surprise leaders Arsenal.

Guardiola on disallowed goal: This is Anfield

Man City boss Pep Guardiola to Sky Sports:

“The referee came to the coaches and said, ‘play on, play on’. There were a million fouls. But after we scored a goal, he decided it is not play on. This is Anfield.

“We had [enough] chances. We had some fantastic chances.

“All the game we were brave, we played the game we should play and I don’t have any complaints or regrets over how we have done it.

“We had chances but not enough to do it. We made a good process to not allow them transitions. In general the back three was brilliant.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola gives his verdict on the game

Man City midfielder Bernardo Silva to Sky Sports:

“What we expect from the referees is consistency in the decisions and when you go through a path of not whistling little contacts throughout the whole game, you need to keep those decisions and keep going that way.

“If you want to whistle all of them, whistle all of them, but if from the beginning of the game you’re not – he was letting us play which is good – then if there’s a goal you cannot whistle that soft one.

“If you want consistency from the referee you cannot change just because there’s a goal and just because it’s a tough decision, you have to make the tough decision and keep the goal.”

Klopp: I deserved my red card

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to Sky Sports:

“Result, perfect; performance, really, really good in an incredibly intense game.

“We defended at an incredibly high level for 99 minutes and had really good footballing moments. We scored one goal and could have scored more.

“They had their moments as well but, especially in the box, we did extremely well. We won nearly all the duels. I think there was one free header from Haaland.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was very happy with his side’s performance

“We showed up today and that’s what we wanted to do.”

On his red card, he said: “In the end, probably deserved. But, that situation, you cannot not whistle. After all the things that happened on the pitch, I don’t know what Mo Salah has to do to get a free-kick.

“Pep [Guardiola] and I agreed on the touchline. We didn’t understand the challenges which were allowed and all these kind of things.

“Why would you do it? Both sides. The game would not be a little bit worse, but we have to take that, we are on the weak side of it. We have no power at all.

“At this moment, something switched off, I’m not proud of that. But it’s the clearest foul I ever saw, in front of the linesman, and he says play on.

“How can you let that situation go? It’s clear he pulled him down. Sometimes we get a bit carried away, and that’s what happened to me in that moment.”

Carra: Win can transform Liverpool season

Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher:

“I think it could [transform Liverpool’s season]. It’s big when you have three Premier League games in one week, you’ve got a real chance to jump up the table.

Sky Sports pundits Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher reflect on Liverpool’s win

“Liverpool have got West Ham in midweek before facing Nottingham Forest on Saturday, so it gives them a good opportunity.

“I thought Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah were outstanding in the game. We’re all searching for reasons why Liverpool dropped off, but any great team when they’re at their best, I think it revolves around five or six players and the rest fit in around them.

“When you think of the stars of the team, you think about the goalkeeper Alisson who has been really good this season, Van Dijk, Trent, Fabinho as the shield, Salah and Sadio Mane.

Mid-table Liverpool beat champions Man City

Liverpool celebrate their victory at Anfield

“Those are the players which stood out for me. Sadio has left, Trent has been nowhere near his level, Van Dijk, Fabinho hasn’t and Salah hasn’t.

“Van Dijk played with more intensity than I’ve ever seen him play with and Salah at the other end was electric. When you get your best players playing, everyone else plays well around them.

“Every outstanding team relies on its five or six leaders, and they were outstanding today. That’s why Liverpool are where they are.”

Analysis: Salah outshines Haaland

Sky Sports’ Nick Wright:

One had nine goals in his last five Premier League appearances; the other had none. But it was Mohamed Salah, not Erling Haaland, who proved the decisive figure at Anfield.

Salah had flickered into life with his six-minute hat-trick against Rangers following a period of poor form and he picked up where he left off against Manchester City. “Electric,” was Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher’s assessment of his performance.

The winning goal showed him at his devastating best, the 30-year-old cushioning Alisson’s long kick and spinning away from City defender Joao Cancelo in one sweeping movement before keeping his cool to beat the advancing Ederson.

But it was not the first time Salah had engineered a route in behind City’s defence, the visitors requiring an outstanding save from Ederson to prevent him from scoring in similar circumstances soon after the interval.

Haaland, meanwhile, floundered at the other end, Liverpool becoming only the second Premier League side all season to prevent him from scoring – and the first to keep a clean sheet against City.

It seemed everyone inside Anfield was waiting for the net to bulge when he met Kevin De Bruyne’s diagonal cross at the far post in the first half, but his header went straight into the arms of Alisson.

He was denied by the Brazilian on other occasions too, once attempting to lift the ball over him following a trademark run off the shoulder of the last man, then seeing a low strike acrobatically pushed around the post in the second half.

It was not Haaland’s day in the end – albeit only by the ludicrous standards he has set himself – and his misfortune was compounded by the foul on Fabinho which prompted VAR to acrimoniously rule out Phil Foden’s goal early in the second period.

The pre-match discussion had focused on how quite how Liverpool would stop Haaland. But this was a reminder, if it was needed, that stopping an in-form Salah is a similarly difficult task.

Liverpool end City’s away run – Opta stats

  • Manchester City have lost a Premier League away game for the first time since August 2021 against Spurs, ending what was the longest unbeaten away run in their league history (22 games).
  • Pep Guardiola has lost 11 matches against Jurgen Klopp as a manager, at least four more defeats than against any other coach.
  • Mohamed Salah has been directly involved in 14 goals against Manchester City in all competitions for Liverpool (nine goals, five assists), his most against any opponent for the Reds.

What’s next?

Liverpool are back in action on Wednesday when they host West Ham at Anfield, with kick-off at 7.30pm.

Manchester City have no midweek fixture, meaning their next outing is on Saturday when Brighton travel to the Etihad Stadium, with kick-off at 3pm.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter hailed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga after his side’s gritty 2-0 win at Aston Villa.

Mason Mount’s double and Kepa’s heroics earned a fifth straight win in all competitions on Sunday.

It cemented Chelsea’s fourth place in the Premier League and they now sit three points clear of Manchester United after their stalemate with Newcastle.

Two sensational Kepa saves to deny Jacob Ramsey and Danny Ings helped Potter remain unbeaten since joining from Brighton last month and the Spain goalkeeper earned the manager’s praise.

Kepa Arrizabalaga makes an incredible point-blank save to keep out Danny Ings’ header and preserve Chelsea’s 1-0 lead against Aston Villa

“It was a hard-fought game. Aston Villa made us suffer, certainly in the first half. We lost our way a little bit and we needed Kepa to make some fantastic saves,” he said.

“He is contributing to us with clean sheets, how we are trying to play and the environment around the place. Kepa found a fantastic level, he made brilliant saves which kept us in the game.

“We were better in the second half, more stable. It wasn’t easy for us given the amount of games we have played, to come from Milan to here.

“I’m happy for Mason and Kepa in particular, they have managed to help us over the line. Different players will have to step up.

“It’s a collective desire to do the ugly stuff in the game. If we need to suffer we have to suffer.”

As the world’s most expensive goalkeeper having signed from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for £71m, it has been questioned whether Chelsea could win a Premier League title with Kepa in between the sticks, but having just turned 28, he is entering his peak years.

Judging by his recent form, it could yet prove to be a worthwhile investment.

Steven Gerrard praises his players for their performance despite losing 2-0 to Chelsea this afternoon

Steven Gerrard is discovering what happens to teams struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League.

On the day when Villa needed a top performance to turn their joyless season around, they were undone by their own bizarre errors.

Tyrone Mings won’t have made a worse mistake from the hundreds of headed clearances he has made during his career and yet here he was at Villa Park setting up Mason Mount’s opener.

Then there was Emiliano Martinez moving away from the side of the goal he was protecting at a 25-yard free-kick as Mount’s second-half effort swerved in. These costly individual errors don’t happen at the other end of the table.

To complete Villa’s frustration, Kepa Arrizabalaga had the game of his life to deny the hosts, who for the best part of an hour performed well enough to win the game.

The performance will give Villa hope they are on the right track, but now Thursday’s trip to Fulham is a crucial fixture for Gerrard as the pressure continues to mount. Life at the bottom is tough and unfair.

Trippier stakes his World Cup starting claim

Kieran Trippier was outstanding in Newcastle’s 0-0 draw at Manchester United

With the news on Saturday that Reece James looks set to miss the World Cup with a knee injury while Kyle Walker remains sidelined and Trent Alexander-Arnold having only just returned from injury, Kieran Trippier staked his claim to be Gareth Southgate’s starting right wing-back in Qatar with a fine performance at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old put in a captain’s display for Newcastle in their goalless draw at Manchester United as he showed his ability at both ends of the pitch.

Defensively he was rock solid, winning possession eight times and making three interceptions – the joint-most for Newcastle in the game.

There was one particular outstanding piece of defending against Cristiano Ronaldo in the second half as he got back superbly to make a well-timed last-ditch tackle to deny the Portugal forward from getting a shot away.

Then there was Trippier’s influence offensively for Newcastle. Their best moment came through the right-back who delivered a fine side-volleyed cross with his weaker foot for Joelinton, who headed against the woodwork twice from it.

The statistics again backed up his effectiveness going forward as he created the most chances (4) and recorded the most final third entries (13) in the game.

Trippier was England’s starting right wing-back in their World Cup semi-final run in Russia 2018 and four years on he could well be starting once again for Southgate in Qatar if he continues with top-notch performances such as these.

Rashford embodies wasteful Man Utd

Marcus Rashford misses a glorious late chance

Marcus Rashford misses a glorious late chance

Marcus Rashford looked to the sky before departing down the Old Trafford tunnel, no doubt mulling over what might have been. Having failed to score from 10 shots against Omonia Nicosia, Erik ten Hag opted to demote the forward to the Manchester United bench for the visit of Newcastle.

Keeping this squad happy will be a constant battle for the Dutchman but winning matches is all that matters. Cristiano Ronaldo shook his head as Rashford replaced him on 71 minutes, a contrast in emotions from when he marked his second coming scoring twice in the corresponding fixture last season.

It was over to Rashford to dig United out of a difficult spot, and he was involved in his side’s two best opportunities to turn one point into three when after setting up Fred for a glaring miss six yards out, Rashford placed his header in the exact same spot, a yard wide of Nick Pope’s left-hand post.

While this draw was another building block in Newcastle’s progression, it halts Manchester United in their tracks after a recent autumn resurgence. Having scored with their 34th shot in the Europa League on Thursday, only two of United’s 15 attempts here were on target.

It says a lot about their current striker situation that fans are pining for Anthony Martial, absent again here through injury, when the Frenchman has one Premier League start in the past 12 months.

For sure, the dreadful Manchester derby defeat demonstrated that Ten Hag has his work cut out to orchestrate a title challenge – but Rashford and the rest of the profligate United attack must rediscover their rhythm if they are to land a statement win over Tottenham in midweek.

Arsenal’s resilience makes them title contenders

Patrick Bamford missed a second-half penalty at Elland Road

They say the sign of champions is winning ugly. And Arsenal have managed two of those victories in a week.

First, they edge past Bodo/Glimt 1-0 in northern Norway with Bukayo Saka’s winner coming off his lips. Now they’ve beaten Leeds with Saka netting the winner again with a goal, penalty and red card for the opposition all chalked off by VAR.

Add a fortunate, soft penalty for their winner against Liverpool last week and some will say Arsenal are lucky. But when does luck stop becoming coincidence?

The Gunners are where they are – with a four-point buffer at the top of the Premier League table – due to their resilience – the word Mikel Arteta keeps repeating this season.

That resilience runs through the team: the redemption of Granit Xhaka after being stripped of the captaincy, Gabriel looking confident respite recent defensive mistakes against Fulham and Tottenham, Bukayo Saka bouncing back with big moments after his Euro 2020 heartache, Aaron Ramsdale stepping up after back-to-back relegations.

A few years ago, Arsenal will have lost all three of these games they’ve won in the last seven days. Before they lacked backbone, wilted under pressure and couldn’t respond to being pegged back.

Now they’re the ones to catch. So how far will this ‘luck’ take them?

Leeds are better than league table suggests

After 10 games, the Premier League tends to divide up into its respective parts: title race, top-four battlers, mid-table side and relegation candidates.

Unfortunately for Leeds, they’re back in the bottom drawer. On the outset, it looks bleak. No wins in six league games, a lack of a reliable goalscorer to get them out of trouble in sight and now one point above the drop zone. The last time they went this long without a win, Marcelo Bielsa was sacked.

But Leeds have all the ingredients to get them out of this predicament. Exciting players, attacking football, a fervent home and away support and a manager who embodies a fighting spirit at the club.

Jesse Marsch reacts after his side were beaten
Image:
Jesse Marsch reacts after his side were beaten

But the small moments are letting them down. Moments like Rodrigo playing a erroneous and unnecessary cross-field ball in the run-up to Saka’s winner, which Jesse Marsch says is “not what we like to do.”

“We were better on the day but we’re walking away with nothing,” said Marsch after his side’s defeat on Sunday. “The first half of the Palace game was outstanding, we should be 3-0 up in that match. We should have been it in this game.

“We’re not capitalising and it puts stress on the environment. I have to stay calm and patient and I hate being patient. I think detest is a better word. But I have to because I see the good work getting done and the progress being made. But at some point we have to build up results.”

If they keep Bamford fit and as sharp as Sunday afternoon, then Leeds will be climbing back up the table in no time.

Strange Southampton baffle again

FREE TO WATCH: Highlights from the Premier League match between Southampton and West Ham

You never know quite what to expect from Southampton. From an impressive win over Chelsea at the end of August to four defeats in a row, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are probably the most up-and-down team in the Premier League.

Defeat against Manchester City last weekend was expected, but losses to Everton, Aston Villa and Wolves before that saw the Saints drop into the relegation zone ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixtures.

They welcomed West Ham to the south coast having lost 11 of their previous 15 matches in the league. The Hammers had won their past four in all competitions.

Form might not have been on Southampton’s side but it is always foolish to write them off. It is even more foolish to write off Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Hasenhuttl, Southampton

They may have been clinging on to a point against the Hammers in the end, but the Saints delivered a first-half performance their manager can be proud of. Only one of their seven shots on target during the opening 45 minutes beat Fabianski, but the hosts showed they have the ability and desire to turn their fortunes around.

However, how much more time the Austrian is given to inspire a revival remains to be seen. There were further boos from some of the home supporters at the final whistle, but he will take some comfort in knowing he has survived worse moments since taking charge in 2018. Two 9-0 defeats spring to mind.

Scamacca key as West Ham find their groove

Declan Rice celebrates West Ham’s equaliser

It might seem strange to praise a forward who went close to scoring on at least four occasions but finished the game without a goal.

However, it is worth mentioning the impact Gianluca Scamacca has made on West Ham in recent weeks. It is no coincidence their season has got back on track just as the striker is finding his feet at his new club.

Goals in recent wins over Wolves and Fulham in the Premier League highlighted why West Ham invested £35.5m to sign the 23-year-old in the summer. Despite failing to find the back of the net at St Mary’s, he showed again what an asset he can be for David Moyes.

He was a constant thorn in Southampton’s side and had the football gods been with him on Sunday, he could have easily scored a hat-trick.

Scamacca’s performances have helped West Ham move away from the relegation zone and he will be confident this is just the start of a successful career in the Premier League. The Italian is one to watch.
